The professional development programme is split into six terms
Each term offers our students specific and unique professional development opportunities
Our programme is designed to forge well-rounded, creative and ambitious artists. So, we offer intensive training and full-scale musical productions throughout the year. Both in standard and immersive settings. Because by the time we say goodbye our aim is for our students to be ready to take their next step into the world of theatre .
Term 1: Intensive training
Duration: 6 weeks
Dates: 19 September – 29 October
The first term will be intensive musical theatre training across a range of disciplines. In order to hone and advance your existing skills. So, working with our professional team of tutors and coaches, you will be prepared for life in the rehearsal room. As well as on the stage. Providing a solid technical professional development grounding for the next term and beyond.
What professional development will you be offered?
- Vocal Coaching; one to one lessons, acting through song and audition technique.
- Acting Training; honing technique to create versatile performers. Focusing on key areas including, such as classical and contemporary script work. As well as improvisation.
- Dance; Technical training in a multitude of styles used in modern musical theatre. Including jazz, ballet, contemporary, ballroom and street.
- Industry sessions; masterclasses hosted by working professionals from all areas of the industry. Including performance, production, professional management and marketing.
Term 2: Full-scale musical
Duration: 6 weeks
Dates: 7 November – 18 December
The focus for this six-week term will be to create a full-scale musical. Culminating in five performances in a regional or off-West End venue. As well as exposure to casting directors and agents and more. All designed to help your professional development.
What development will you be offered?
- Experience that can be used on your CV and Spotlight profile.
- Personal feedback and mentoring throughout the project. With professional tutors, on a one-to-one basis.
- The opportunity to hone your craft in the context of a show. Therby bringing all practical skills together.
- Industry-appropriate casting.
Term 3: Artistic exploration
Duration: 5 weeks
Dates: 9 January – 10 February
The first Spring term will focus on a different area of musical theatre professional development. And that’s honing students’ skills in practical, non-performance-based work. Such as teaching and leading specific community outreach projects.
What will you be offered?
- The opportunity to work with younger students (under the observation of professional teachers for guidance). Thereby developing teaching and management skills.
- Workshops with industry professionals that cover multiple areas of performance and production.
- Guidance on filling in arts grant applications. As well as the opportunity to make such applications while studying.
- The chance to take on various creative roles aside from performing.
- Learning about the process of booking venues, theatre hires, responsibilities and mechanisms.
- Guidance on managing personal finances. Including filling out tax returns and financial responsibilities.
- The opportunity to produce a piece of theatre-in-education and taking this into external venues such as schools.
Term 4: New musical writing
Duration: 7 weeks
Dates: 20 February – 8 April
The fourth term will be focused on the research and development of new musical writing. Including workshopping new pieces of work before moving into a full production.
What professional development will you be offered?
- Experience of working in research and development of new writing. As well as how a piece changes in the rehearsal room.
- Applying the skills learnt in term three to develop the show, as well as managing the logistics of the production.
- Touring the production to a minimum of two different venues. Thereby creating an understanding of the demands and requirements of touring.
- Personal feedback and mentoring throughout the project with professional tutors, on a one-to-one basis.
- A credit for use on CVs and Spotlight profile.
- Production of a full cast recording.
Term 5: Showcase
Duration: 5 weeks
Dates: 24 April – 27 May
The first Summer term will be used for an industry showcase for students. Here, each individual will be given the opportunity to perform on their own. And also as part of an ensemble. This will take place in a regional touring venue or smaller West End venue.
What professional development will you be offered?
- The chance to perform individually in front of industry experts, such as casting directors and agents.
- A filmed studio version of the showcase. Thereby creating useful material for showreels.
Term 6: Immersive site production
Duration: 6 weeks
Dates: 5 June – 15 July
The final term will consist of a full scale, immersive musical production, in a site-specific location. Because immersive theatre is becoming a far more popular art form. So, the production will provide an experience that very few performers get to experience while training.
What professional development will you be offered?
- The final opportunity in the academic year to be exposed to casting directors and agents.
- A unique performance opportunity and experience in an immersive theatrical environment.
- Personal feedback and mentoring throughout the project with professional tutors on a one-to-one basis.
- A professional credit for use on CVs and Spotlight profile.
